A Guide to Victorious Festival Portsmouth

One of the highlights of the UK festival season, Victorious Festival brings three days of fun and frolics to the south coast this August. A true family affair, Portsmouth’s Victorious Festival won Best Family Festival at last year’s UK Festival awards thanks to its astonishing array of amusements for old and young alike. Boasting a world-class line-up of the biggest bands and up-and-coming artists, there’s no better way to get your rocks off this summer during a stay at our holiday cottages or B&B accommodation!

From 23 to 25 August, Southsea seafront turns into Party Central as Victorious gets underway. The Quay Quarters crew loves nothing more than a music festival, and we’re truly blessed with such a fabulous line-up again this year. We’ve broken down the line-up for each day so you can plan your festival trip as best as possible. With both individual day tickets and weekend passes on offer, you can easily tailor your festival experience to fit with a stay with us just a 30-minute drive away, between Chichester and Portsmouth.

MUSIC

Friday

The first day of Victorious Festival Portsmouth gets off to a flyer with a main stage performance by UK ska legends The Specials, back this year as part of their long-awaited reunion tour. The Coventry band are true British icons with a trilby hat-load of hits to match, as well as a huge and loyal fanbase. Our top festival tip: make sure to get to the main Common stage nice and early, as this town will be nothing like a Ghost Town when The Specials come on!

Fans of mid-2000s British indie bands are well served with sets by The Zutons and Doves, plus a nostalgic turn from Britpop survivors Dodgy – all on the main stage. Over on the Beats & Swing stage, there will be plenty of acts who are, well, beating and swinging! Dub Pistols bring their trademark mash-up of dub, reggae, ska and drum ‘n’ bass for a musical experience quite unlike anything else. Finally, on the chilled-out People’s Lounge stage, witness some local talent with the Pompey Underground Hip Hop and Grime Show, featuring rap battles and freestyle galore.

Saturday

Saturday is the wildest and best-attended day of Victorious Festival and, as such, there’s an incredible line-up to sink your teeth into (provided you’ve brushed them after one of our hearty breakfasts!) We’re already counting the days for ‘Special Afternoon Guests’ All Saints to take the stage – you’ll Never Ever see a better band live and on Southsea’s Pure Shores, no less! Later in the evening we’ll try to Hold Back the River for James Bay to make an entrance with his winning formula of acoustic-driven pop songs.

Over at the Castle stage – named for Henry VIII’s great fortification just next door – it’s indie o’clock with a double-whammy of two noughties big hitters: London legends Bloc Party and loveable Swedish rogues The Hives. If you prefer a mellower brand of music, Saturday sees the unveiling of the Acoustic stage as well as Mercury Prize winning singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy back at the Castle stage.

Sunday

Portsmouth’s Victorious Festival bows out in style with the biggest name of the entire weekend –New Order. The Manchester legends will be dipping into their vast back-catalogue of hits and deep cuts, leaving you on an end-of-festival high that may result in a Blue Monday the following morning! Earlier in the day, the Common stage will be Jammin‘ with a nostalgic set by Ziggy Marley, son of Bob, who’ll be serving up a thick dollop of the finest reggae.

Kings of the UK pop charts Clean Bandit headline the Castle stage and are sure to attract a court of teenaged fans. Trust us when we say there’s no place we’d Rather Be on Sunday evening than with Grace Chatto and her band! At the Seaside stage, mewanwhile, a full-blown party is guaranteed with dance music legends Basement Jaxx, supported by festival stalwart DJ Yoda. Last, but not least, David Bowie fans can get their fix of the Thin White Duke with the tribute act Rebel Heroes – almost as good as the real thing!

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Victorious Festival isn’t all about music. This year’s line-up features a supporting mix of stand-up comedy, book readings, kids activities arts and crafts, and more. Those planning to stay in one of our child-friendly holiday cottages will be pleased to hear that The Kids Arena styles itself as a festival within a festival, offering a veritable fantasy world of larger-than-life characters and fun adventures for the little ones. We recommend the Peppa Pig Summer Festival to all Peppa peeps, with storytelling sessions and “fun festival crafts” on offer aswell as a chance to meet Peppa and George!

When it comes to food, Victorious has thought of pretty much everything to satisfy both devout foodies and hungry punters. From the delicious-sounding £Teriyaki Shack” serving Japanese comfort food to the classic cream tea sets of “Twisted Tearoom”, you’ll never go hungry (or thirsty) at Victorious

THE PRACTICAL STUFF

One day tickets cost more depending on which day you plan on attending. For adults Friday-only standard entry is £40, rising to £45 on Saturday and Sunday. A full weekend pass, which gets you in for all three days, cost £125 if you eschew the bog-standard tent camping and stay in one of our luxury holiday cottages. for children aged 5 to 12 years old, every day is £8 (£24 for the weekend) and for those aged 4 or under it’s only £1 per day!

As for getting there, Victorious Festival is located in Southsea beside Portsmouth Harbour, only 30 minutes’ drive from Quay Quarters. It’s just a quick hop back home after a long day in the festival mud where you can take a well-earned shower or take a soak in the tub before a comfortable night’s sleep.

Every year we get plenty of festival goers who stay with us for Victorious Festival rather than slum it in a leaky tent. Demand is always high around this time of year, so book now to secure one of our holiday cottages near Hampshire before it’s too late. We look forward to seeing you all happy and glorious!¬

Who’s Looking Forward to Glorious Goodwood?

It’s that time of year again- Glorious Goodwood is back! Taking place from 30 July to 3 August, the Qatar Goodwood Festival packs an astonishing amount of sporting and social fun into five days. A long-standing favourite of the Quay Quarters Crew, as well as many of our guests, this legendary flat-racing event is one of the jewels in the crown of the Sussex summer calendar.

Luckily for us, Goodwood takes place only a short drive from Quay Quarters’ luxury holiday cottages and B&B accommodation in West Sussex at one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world. With tickets starting from £25 and a host of packages available, you can easily arrange the perfect day out at Goodwood. So whether you fancy a day at the races, or you’re up for the full week of events, treat yourself to Quay Quarters as a base for the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Here’s our handy guide to the 2019 festival, broken down day-by-day.

30-31 July – Day 1 & 2

Feel the buzz of the first day’s action as Glorious Goodwood gets underway with the traditional Opening Ceremony. Packed with all the pomp and pageantry you’d expect from a celebrated Goodwood horse racing event, it features a parade of last year’s winning horses and the unveiling of special cups commissioned for 2019’s feature race winners. There’s also the first big race of the week: the £500,000 Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup, won last year by Stradivarius. On day 2 the action gets even hotter with the £1,000,000 Qatar Sussex Stakes, as well as two further group races to whet your appetite.

1 August – Laddies Day

Who doesn’t love Ladies Day at Glorious Goodwood? The undisputed highlight of the festival, Ladies Day is celebrated as much for its outrageous outfits as the thrilling eight-race card. Truly, the place to see and be seen, you’ll bee expected to look the part with a stunning dress, a dapper suit, or anything in between! The day’s racing starts with the Magnolia Cup, a ladies’ charity race featuring twelve fearless jockeys. Later on, the £600,00 Qatar Nassau Stakes always draws a huge crowd. Make sure to book your Ladies Day stay at one of Quay Quarters luxury cottages well in advance, as this is always a very popular time for visitors.

2 – 3 August – Day 4 & 5

Friday and Saturday at Glorious Goodwood is as lively as you’d expect, as the meeting builds towards a thrilling climax. Day 4 features the sought-after Best Dressed award with glamorous prizes galore, including an all-expenses paid holiday to South Africa. Goodwood horse racing racing action is provided by four groups with some of the biggest names in the sport. On Day 5, the festival bows out in style with the thunderous six-furlong cavalry charge in the £250,000 Qatar Stewards Cup – a sight to behold!

Pip them to the post and book your Qatar Goodwood Festival stay at Quay Quarters

Goodwood Racecourse is also home to a handful of other summer events, from the flamboyant outfits of Goodwood Revival to the roar of vintage cars and motorbikes at the Festival of Speed. If you are unable to make this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival , the Quay Quarters crew highly recommends these as a fun alternative.

But if you are lucky enough to be here for Glorious Goodwood, there’s no better place to stay than our luxurious bed and breakfast accommodation, barely a stone’s throw from the racecourse.

A Guide to Food Festivals in Chichester, Portsmouth & Southsea

As well as cooking up a storm in the kitchen at breakfast time for our lovely luxury bed and breakfast guests, the Quay Quarters crew loves a bit of locally-sourced grub. And what better way is there to explore what’s hot from West Sussex and Hampshire producers than at the many food festivals, fairs and markets that happen in and around nearby Chichester and Portsmouth? This is our taste bud tingling ultimate guide to local food festivals for all our foodie friends.

28-30 June

Portsmouth Seafood Festival – Gunwharf Quays

A relative newbie to the foodie scene, Portsmouth Seafood Festival has been going for the last two years and returns at the end of June with some fantastically fishy tales to tell. This free three-day event is all about paying homage to seafood from around the world as well as an opportunity to see local chefs in action showcasing the best of the Solent and the south east’s surrounding waters. With jazz and swing bands, champagne and craft beers to really get the party started and stalls selling everything from soft shell crab to native oysters to fabulous fillets of fish, this is an awesome day out in a lovely location (19 miles from Quay Quarters)

12-14 July

Food Festival with Rhythm & Blues – Priory Park, Chichester

New for this year, this looks to be a full-on fiesta offering all your street food favourites you can wrap your chops around there and then as well as grocery stalls where you can pick up ingredients so you can have a go at home (or while staying in one of our luxury self-catering cottages). There will also be an array of beverages, from real ale and cider to gin and prosecco, for enjoyment in the alfresco dining area to the chilled beats of live local music. Taking place mid-July with tickets available in advance and on the gate, this promises to be Toe Tappin’, Finger Lickin’ Family-Focused Fun!

20-21 July

Southsea food Festival – Southsea Town Centre

Held in the town centre and offering myriad market stalls brimming with some of the finest local food and drink, Southsea Food Festival is set for 20-21 July.

A Guide to This Year’s Festival of Chichester

One of West Sussex’s cultural highlights of the year, running 15 June to 14 July, Festival of Chichester is a month-long showcase of local and international artists. With dozens of events within walking, cycling and driving distance of our luxury holiday cottages, make Quay Quarters your base for discovering the delights of this fantastic Chichester Festival.

Founded in 2013, Festival of Chichester has quickly become a fixture of the Sussex cultural calendar. The festival has always been run by enthusiastic volunteers with generous support from organisations such as the local council, Chichester Cathedral, Chichester Observer, and more. This year’s line-up features hundreds of different shows spread across dozens of venues.

The sheer diversity of the line-up means there’s something to suit every taste. From spoken word events with international authors to school music performances and everything in between, you’re bound to find something worth attending during your stay at one of Quay Quarters’ 5-star holiday cottages.

What’s on at Chichester Festival Theatre?

The heart-warming This Is My Family (20 April to 15 June) is a play about – you guessed it – a dysfunctional family who win the holiday of a lifetime. David Hare’s play Plenty (7 to 29 June) makes it debut at Chichester Festival Theatre this summer, with a dazzling plot involving an ex-secret agent in post-war London. For a good old-fashioned sing-along there’s Oklahoma! (15 July to 7 September) – we love a classic Rodgers & Hammerstein romp!

One of Britain’s best-loved local theatres, Chichester Festival Theatre is a mere 10 minutes’ drive from our Sussex holiday cottages. You’re sure to find a great show no matter when you’re staying with us, with plenty of family-friendly productions on throughout the year.
If spoken word’s your thing, don’t miss Victoria Hislop in conversation with Chichester’s own Kate Mosse (19 June) as well as Dame Patricia Routledge presenting an Evening of Poetry and Music (9 July), part of South Downs Poetry Festival.

Chichester Festival Theatre Programme 2019

One of Britain’s best-loved regional theatres, Chichester Festival Theatre is a must-visit during a stay at Quay Quarters. With an international line-up of acclaimed plays and musicals, there’s never a dull moment at our local theatre.

Whether clicking our ruby heels together for The Wizard of Oz or shouting “the dagger’s behind you!” at Macbeth, the Quay Quarters crew loves a trip to the theatre. Here’s our hand-picked guide to what’s on at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2019; just one part of a rich cultural scene in Chichester near our luxury bed & breakfast accommodation and holiday cottages.

Main House

APRIL 26-MAY 25 – Shadowlands, by William Nicholson, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh

C S Lewis, legendary author of the Chronicles of Narnia, tries to juggle an ordered home life with the demands of his all-male college at Oxford. But when he falls in love with Joy Gresham, a wild and passionate New York poet, his world gets turned upside down. Starring Hugh Bonneville as Lewis, this award-winning play has been adapted for both TV and film.

JUNE 7-29 Plenty, by David Hare, directed by Kate Hewitt

Ex-secret agent Susan Traherne is all at sea. Twenty years after her heroic exploits in Nazi-occupied France, she’s stuck in an unhappy marriage to a wealthy diplomat, nostalgic for the romance and danger of her youth. David Hare’s acclaimed play zips forwards and backwards in time as Britain loses its way in the world – and Susan tries to remake her past.

JULY 15- SEPTEMBER 7 – Oklahoma!, music by Richard Rodgers, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, directed by Jeremy Sams

When pretty farm girl Laurey Williams rides into cowboy Curly McClain’s life, he can barely contain his joy. But the sly, mysterious farm-hand Jud Fry has his sinsiter eyes on Laurey as well. This rollicking, thigh-slapping musical is a true American classic beloved by all ages. If you haven’t yet discovered the eternal joys of Oklahoma!, now’s your chance at Chichester Festival theatre.

SEPTEMBER 21 – OCTOBER 26 – Macbeth, By William Shakespeare, directed by Paul Miller

Lord Macbeth (John Simm) is a national hero in Scotland, his enemies vanquished. But when a trio of witches make an ambiguous prophecy, will his mind start to crack? After the scheming Lady Macbeth hatches a plot to murder King Duncan, both their worlds fall into madness and chaos. This electrifying new take on Shakespeare’s classic play is a must-see.

DECEMBER 14-29 -Chichester Festival Youth Theatre: The Wizard of Oz, by L Frank Baum, adapted by John Kane from the motion picture screenplay, directed by Lucy Betts

“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore…” When young Dorothy and her dog Toto are swept away by a prairie tornado, they find themselves in a strange and unfamiliar land: Oz. dust off your ruby slippers and join Chichester Festival Youth Theatre along the yellow brick road for this classic tale of friendship, magic and finding yourself all over again.

Minerva

APRIL 20 – JUNE 15 – This Is My Family, a musical by Tim Firth, directed by Daniel Evans

Picture it: you’re 13-years old, the world at your feet – and you’ve just won a magazine competition! The prize? A dream holiday for you and your entire family, anywhere in the world. The only trouble is, Nicky’s family isn’t quite as perfect she described in the magazine. This life-affirming musical comedy celebrates the never-ending journey that’s family love.

JULY 21-27 – The Deep Blue Sea, by Terence Rattigan, directed by Paul Foster

London. 1951. In a run-down Ladbroke grove flat, socialite Hester Collyer is found unconscious by her neighbours after taking an overdose of drugs. What happened in poor Hester’s life to cause her to spiral downward? And can she make a recovery? this gripping play by Terence Rattigan unfolds over a single day in just one room.

AUGUST 1-24 – 8 Hotels, a new play by Nicholas Wright, directed by Richard Eyre.

Paul Robeson is an acclaimed singer, actor and political activist famous for Ol Man River. In 1944 he’s touring America as Shakespeare’s Othello. Though he calls fellow actors his friends, in 1940s America they’re far from equals. As relationships sour, bitterness and revenge begin to take hold – with sinister political motives.

AUGUST 30 – SEPTEMBER 28 – Hedda Tesman, by Coredlia Lynn; after Henrik Ibsen; directed by Holly Race Roughan

It’s 2019. Hedda Tesman can’t seem to escape her life as a bored, bitter wifeto a doting husband. But when Thea, her estranged daughter, walks back into their life, the past begins to repeat itself and Hedda sets out on a road of destruction. Coredlia Lynn’s new play is a brilliant take on Isben’s iconic Hedda Gabler, re-imagined for the 21st century.

OCTOBER 5 – NOVEMBER 9 – The Butterfly Lion, by Michael Morpurgo, a new adaptation by Anna Ledwich, directed by Dale Rooks.

Remember Africa?” When little Bertie is packed off to boarding school in England, leaving his African childhood behind, he’s also leaving his best friend – a white lion that Bertie saved as a cub. But when he meets Millie, whose own lion is caged in a French circus, they embark on a magical adventure that celebrates the bonds of friendship and the beauty of nature.

Other Events

SEPTEMBER 21 – Celebrating Iris Murdoch (Talk & Screening)

One of the 20th century’s best-loved authors, Iris Murdoch’s life was a tale of contrasts. when a young Iris (Kate Winslet) falls for timid virgin John Bayley at her Oxford College, the world seems at her feet. But decades later, an older Iris (Judi Dench) struggles with Alzheimer’s under the care of a frustrated John (Jim Broadbent), who won an Oscar for the role). The screening will follow a special talk about the impact and relevance of Murdoch’s rarely-preformed dramatic works.

You’re in for a fine show when you stay in one of our holiday cottages…

Whether you’re in the mood for a matinee after a comfortable night’s sleep and a hearty meal at our luxury bed and breakfast or an evening performance before drinks on the patio of your chosen 5-star holiday cottage by moonlight is more your thing, book to stay with us before or after you see a show at Chichester Festival Theatre and you’re sure to want an encore.

Renowned fashion designer and queen of luxury clothing Coco Channel was right on the money when she said: “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury”. this is the channel up which we tack when it comes to our luxury holiday cottages.

Beautiful bathrooms

After a day of watersports in Chichester Harbour, a bracing morning walk at East Head or an afternoon exploring the delights of the South Downs National Park, your tired feet and aching muscles might be in need of a good hot bath.

Guide to good eating in Chichester

Though we offer B&B accommodation and luxury self-catering holiday let options, it’s nice to know you can down pots and pans and enjoy a great meal while you’re on a relaxing break. As we’re located right on the doorstep of Chichester Harbour and close to Chichester city centre (just 3 miles away) and the South Downs National Park (just over 5 miles away), we thought it would be useful to put together a guide to good eating in Chichester and the surrounding area.

From gastro pub grub and seafood medleys to afternoon tea and incredible curries, there’s something to suit every palate and budget in our Chichester good eating guide. We hope you find something that tickles your fancy (and your taste buds) and makes your stay at Quay Quarters complete.

Good eating in Chichester City

Confucius – A family-run Chinese restaurant that’s been established just off South Street Chichester (Cooper Street) for over 30 years, this is a fine example of great things coming in small packages. the venue is bijou but the menu is packed with flavour and features British/Chinese cuisine favourites. some of our favourites are sumptuous mixed seafood with crispy noodles, the delicious steamed dim sum selection and the sweet, sour and spicy taste senseation of Kung Po pork. Gordon and Yvonne Lee who run the restaurant offer a bargain set menu at lunchtime (around £7 for three courses!) and those who want to chow down with chopsticks from the comfort of their luxury holiday cottage can get takeaway delivered too.

Real Burger Kitchen – Serving up simply great burgers, this small independent burger bar has a fun American diner vibe and a lip-smacking menu to boot. You’ll find all the classics from burgerrs and dogs to meats and grills. There are some great veggie options and a kid’s menu too. don’t miss the sweet temptations either; the Hardshakes (strictly for grownups) are to die for! Make sure you book (especially at the weekend) and check out the Real Burger Kitchen when it’s decked for Halloween or Christmas, they really go all-out.

Thai Lemongrass – With restaurants in Rustington, Petersfield and Horsham as well as Chichester, Lemongrass is a lovely “local chain”. The service and restaurant atmosphere is great and the menu proffers a bundle of freshly prepared, contemporary yet authentic and aromatic Thai cuisine such as: Squid Kari Age, Tom Yum Soup, Duck Paradise and Lamb Shank Massaman. Wash all that down with a Thai beer and you’ll be happier than a badger in Bangkok. they also offer takeaway with 15% off the restaurant price.

The Cafe at Pallant House Gallery – Great for afternoon tea or a light lunch after a wander around the renowned 21st Century art gallery in an 18th century house, The Cafe also offers a lunch menu, a Sunday lunch menu (including traditional roasts) and a two-course menu for Thursday evenings (the only time it’s open for dinner). Look out for their monthly pop-up dinners too./ In February 2019 they held an Apres Ski event with a European themed menu and a fire pit that set the outdoor bar area aglow. The Quay Quarters crew were among the brave souls who ate alfresco in the 0c weather!

Boston Tea Party – If you’re not staying in our B&B accommodation and you’re looking for a brilliant breakfast, look no further than Boston Tea Party. The Quay Quarters crew is particularly partial to Sourdough Eggy Bread with Smoked Bacon and Avocado as well as Sweetcorn Hash. Want something nutritious and quick you can have on the go while exploring the local area? The Breakfast Smoothie or Kefir Colada are a win. Approach the cakes with caution – the Coffee, Walnut & Cardamom is divine.

Good eating in Chichester Harbour

Crown & Anchor – the Quay Quarters local, just over the road from our dog-friendly holiday cottages! this traditional pun (that’s also dog-friendly) serves a fine selection of ales, wines and food sourced from the freshest seasonal ingredients – many of which are local. You must try the seafood menu, which includes fish-tasitc fancies like: Dell Quay Seabass, South Coast Cod and Selsey Crab. why not give the Seaweed Salted Triple cooked Chips a try too? All this and you can dine with phenomenal views overlooking Dell Quay and Chichester Harbour. this is a real crowd-pleaser in the warmer weather so make sure you book to secure a table.

The Boat House Cafe – Chichester Marina’s very own cafe is ideal if you love listening to the chink of halyards as you enjoy a cuppa and a cake. Looking for good eating in Chichester? Breakfast, brunch or lunch there are a number of yummy choices from Selsey Crab on Brioche to the Falafel and Halloumi Burger. they offer a healthy kids menu and are open 7 days a week.

The Cafe by Lucy Armstrong Chocolates – Got a sweet tooth? Go and visit Lucy and try her goodies. This charming little cafe close to East Wittering beach is run by a true chocolatier who creates proper hot chocolate drinks as well as an array of homemade cakes and savouries. We find Lucy’s chocolate nut energy bars are perfect for perking you up during a brisk walk at the Witterings and East Head. Her salted caramels and white chocolate cheesecake are heavenly too.

Good eating in South Downs National Park

The Earl of March – A country pub that offers fine dining, some would say this is the epitome of good eating in Chichester. Close to Goodwood Racecourse and a favourite with visitors of Goodwood Festival of Speed (attracting movie stars such as Keanu Reeves too), The Earl is one to add to your itinerary. The food is exquisite both in flavour and presentation. The set menu offers a culinary exploration of seasonal and local produce. You’ll find venison from Standsted Park and South Coast seafood on the main menu. Watch out for their seasonal showcase celebrations including an Asparagus Fest in May and a Strawberry Fest in July.

Nava Thai – Traditional Thai dishes served in a traditional British pub! Close to Midhurst and smack bang in the South Downs National Park, this is worth the 17-mile scenic drive from Quay Quarters. the Roast Rib of Pork, Pud Thai, Po Pud Bai Kaprao and Gaeng Kaew Wan are good here.
